What is Hypnosis?

The National Council of Hypnotherapy of which I am a member describes hypnosis as follows

Opinions vary on the exact definition of this natural state of mind. First of all, contrary to what many people believe, hypnosis is not always a trance state or a sleep state even though a person in hypnosis may appear to be sleeping. Hypnosis is really natural state of mind and is an important part of everyday life. Whenever our mind wanders, daydreams or is focused on something, such as reading a book, driving a familiar route, watching a film we are in a state of hypnosis.

Brain scans on people who are in hypnosis state show that brain wave activity moves from a Beta state to an Alpha state, and sometimes a Theta state. This is not dissimilar to the pattern of brain activity during meditation.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy involves talking together to help clients overcome their difficulties. Psychotherapy is often referred to as a ‘talking treatment’.

What to expect:

Solution Focused Psychotherapy is future oriented:

The type of Psychotherapy I practice is ‘Solution Focused Therapy techniques’ and is designed to reduce anxiety and calm the mind. As the name suggests it focuses on solutions for the future, rather than analyzing problems of the past.

Provided you are willing to make changes to the way you think, the therapy can be highly effective in relieving the symptoms of anxiety and stress. Focusing on solutions means we do not dwell on problems.

What is Hypnosis like?

Actually, we all experience the Hypnotic state in our everyday lives we can go into trance every seven minutes or so.

Have you ever been so engrossed in a book or film that you have not been conscious of time passing? If so, you’ve been in a state of focused attention, not unlike the feeling of being Hypnotized.

During Hypnosis you will be guided into a similar state of focused attention where you can benefit from accessing your subconscious mind.

Will I lose control?

Many people often think that during hypnosis you lose control and somehow give someone else access to your mind making you cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog.

I can assure you that you have full control at all times in fact solution focused hypnotherapy gives you more control over your thoughts and feelings as it encourages positivity and solution finding it is not a talking therapy I will not be asking any questions during trance.

Are there any dangers?
No danger at all you will simply be in a relaxed state.

Will I remember what happened during Hypnosis?
You will remember most of what happens and will be aware of the sounds around you,  this is how our memories usually work. For example, when you listen to a meeting or speech you don’t remember everything that has been said, but you will recall the majority of it.  The same applies with Hypnosis.

Can anyone be hypnotised?
As everyone has the ability to daydream it is safe to say that the majority of people can achieve at least a light state of trance, this is enough to benefit from hypnosis.
